Happened upon the Taipei Game Show? No? Us neither, but Nicholas Khoo of 9eekonomics was, and we’re glad he made it. Spotted at the event was Gigabyte’s latest docking laptop, the M1405. On the go, there’s a 14-inch, 1366 x 768 resolution TFT LED, Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300, up to 4GB memory and 500GB storage, DVD, Windows 7, and graphics provided by an Intel GMA 4500MHD — attach that external GPU and you’ve got extra ports and GeForce GT220 with 1GB discrete memory. It’s got a 6-cell battery, but you can add an addition 3-cell if you don’t mind ditching the disc drive. No prices or release date, but expect an even grander unveil next month at CeBIT. More photos via the source link, video after the break.

Coveting an iPad, but not willing to pay full price? If you happen to live in Austria and don’t mind committing to a two-year data contract, Hutchison’s got you covered. The carrier’s offering a 333 Euro (approximately US $455) discount if you sign up for a 29.90 Euro, 5GB monthly data contract. Sounds great, but frankly we still don’t know how much it’s gonna cost outside of the US — the foreign sites still list American prices, as far as we have the ability to tell. The other catch is that instead of offering the integrated 3G version, you’re getting a Huawei i-Mo 3G modem to create a personal WiFi cloud with the iPad. Elegant? Not really, but it’s still quite the deal (short-term, at any rate). No indication when Apple’s device will hit Austria, but we gotta imagine they wouldn’t set up such an offer without a short-term plan.

Logitech’s Squeezebox Touch has had a somewhat troubled launch since being announced back in September alongside the Squeezebox Radio, and it looks like the road to availability just got a bit bumpier. While Logitech isn’t saying anything officially itself just yet, a Slim Devices developer has now posted on the official Squeezebox forums that we’re still looking at “a couple of months until release” — which is well off Logitech’s most recent promise of a February release date, and might even bump up against its future Android-based device.

NASA is preparing Space Shuttle Endeavour for a 4:39am EST launch, “14 hours before the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints kick off Super Bowl 44 in South Florida.” This mission, first of the final five planned, will be used to deliver the earth observation deck to the ISS.

The predawn shuttle launch is also expected to be the last ever to blast off in darkness. At liftoff, Endeavour’s twin solid rocket boosters will light up the night sky, Zamka said. That’s the first thing Florida skywatchers will see.

Send a Ball, the online store that lets you create personalized inflatable balls for any occasion, made its ABC Shark Tank debut tonight. Here’s how the business started: “One day I [co-founder Michele) was in Osco, saw a BIN of bouncy balls, grabbed one and thought “I can mail this”. Took a sharpie, addressed it to my BFF Sharon, wrote “Have BALL with your new baby”, went to the post office and mailed it.” More information. Video after the break.

Bandwidth scarcity, is there any more pressing global issue that we’re faced with this day? We think not. Given the exponential growth in both computing power and software’s exploitation and expectation of greater resources, it’s no surprise that at some point we’ll have to look beyond simple electrical currents as the transporters of our data. One bold step taken in that direction has been the demonstration of an operational germanium-on-silicon laser by researchers at MIT. By tweaking the electron count in germanium atoms with the help of some added phosphorous, they’ve been able to coax them into a photon-emitting say of being — something nobody thought possible with indirect bandgap semiconductors. Perhaps the ideal part of this is that germanium can be integrated relatively easily into current manufacturing processes, meaning that light-based internal communication within our personal is now at least a little bit closer to becoming a reality.

zDARPA-based Siri digital assistant hits the App Store, smartphone sentience can't be far behind (video)

It’s been well over six months since we first got wind of Siri, the DARPA-inspired smartphone app that pledged to take all the hassle out of… well… life. It’s a virtual assistant that can take care of menial tasks, things like finding restaurants, hearing reviews, and even booking tables — all with your voice. Siri asks easy questions and reacts to your answers, and while it sadly seems to have lost some of its military feel since its DARPA days (bummer), it’s a lovely companion to your happening lifestyle. Plus it’s free, and free is good! Check out a demonstration video after the break, and hit up the App Store to make with the download. Meanwhile, if you’re on some other smartphone platform you’ll have to wait. We fully anticipate Siri will break free of its current monotasking abode sometime in the future, but we don’t know when. We just don’t know when.
