Nissan’s already hard at work on some crash-avoidance systems for regular, human-driven vehicles, but it looks like it’s not stopping there, with it now also showing off its BR23C robotic “car,” which apparently takes its inspiration from the humble bumblebee. That comes in the form of the BR23C’s laser range finder (or LRF), which acts like a bee’s compound eye to detect obstacles up to two meters away within a 180-degree radius. When combined with the slightly mysterious crash avoidance system, that apparently lets the automobile react “instinctively” the split second it detects an obstacle and maneuver accordingly. Of course, as you can see above, Nissan doesn’t seem to be quite ready to test the system with any human passengers just yet, but the company has some huge plans for the future, with it aiming to cut its rate of vehicle crashes in half by 2015 compared to its stats from 1995.

Robot Portrait

This robot portrait artist “has developed far more advanced conversation skills, along with a voice that sounds a lot less like Steven Hawking.” Video after the break.

We kinda miss that feather pen he was sporting before, but his movement’s a lot more natural now and his new marker seems to have helped his drawing style.

Resident Evil 5 Screenshots

Capcom has just released a batch of new Resident Evil Five screenshots, showing motorcycles, Hummers, and more. Click here for first picture in gallery.

No idea who, exactly, at Capcom stated “Hey, you know what we need? Zombie dirt bikes!”, but the man should get a gold star.

Leaps and bounds have been made with Sylvain Calinon’s robotic portrait artist since we first caught a glimpse of this breathtaking AI being — and no, we’re not just referring to the stylish beret and mustache. Now dubbed “Salvador DaBot”, the portraitist has developed far more advanced conversation skills, along with a voice that sounds a lot less like Steven Hawking. We kinda miss that feather pen he was sporting before, but his movement’s a lot more natural now and his new marker seems to have helped his drawing style — similar to old-school comic art. See this awesome little guy in action after the break.

Wall PC

The Wall Computer does without “a top and sides to add some ventilation, and a battery of six, upward-blowing LED-lit fans keep everything cool.” Click here for first picture in gallery.

That monitor allows access to the render farm from the lobby (though there are several other terminals on the other side of the wall, all linked to the unit by a KVM switch).

Ariel Atom Car

When is an Ariel Atom vehicle not just an Ariel Atom? When you spend 15-months building your own. This homemade version “cranks out about 160 horsepower and does 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds - just under a second behind the real Atom.” Click here for first picture in gallery.

The body was fashioned from an old kayak and a doghouse. The car’s street-legal and registered, and Proxicentauri claims it gets 35 mpg.

Ken Griffey Jr Baseball

Ken Griffey Jr Baseball for the SNES “has a Major League Baseball license but not a Major League Baseball Players Association license, meaning that the game has real stadiums and real teams, but not real players.” ScrewAttack takes a look back at this title after the break.

Nintendo released a portable version of the game in 1997 for the Game Boy with real players and stats from the 1996 season. The gameplay is similar to its predecessor’s, though it is sometimes sluggish due to hardware restrictions.

Look National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, we understand this is your first walking, bi-pedal robot — but why the peel-away face? Just slap in some large manga eyes and button-mouth and we might be able to sleep at night. But no, you show up at the Taipei International Invention Show with this creepoid, capable of singing via synthesizer and walking 2-meters in a straight line — presumably in preparation to celebrate our demise.
