More than just a standard piece of cardboard, this Planetary Gear business card “will definitely get noticed - making you appear more creative and hardworking than you probably are.” Video after the break.

Granted, making one of these cards using the basic instructions provided by Thingverse is going to be a bit tricky, so don’t go handing these out to just anyone.

They’ve manged to make it to the five-year mark despite a few considerable bumps in the road, but it looks like one of the Mars rovers has once again hit a snag, and NASA is now furiously trying to sort out the problem. Apparently, the issue first arose earlier this week when Spirit reported that it had received its driving commands but didn’t move. Things were then further complicated later in the day when Spirit failed to record its daily activities, and it seems to have been all downhill since, with the rover unable to even locate the sun in order to reorient itself. What’s more, while they’re still trying to run some diagnostics to pinpoint the problem, NASA engineers say that the troubles could possibly be caused by cosmic rays hitting the rover, which we all know can only lead to one thing…. zombie rovers.

Remember that DARPA initiative from a few years back to create cyborg insects? With funding from the bureau, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have managed to control a rhinoceros beetle via radio signals, demonstrated in a flight test shown on video at this week’s IEEE MEMS 2009 conference. A module placed on the arthropod uses six electrodes affixed to the brain and muscles to commandeer its free will. The device weighs 1.3g — much less than the 3g payload these guys can handle, and with enough wiggle room to attach sensors for surveillance. Ultimately, scientists state they want to use the beetle’s own sensors — namely, its eyes — to capture intel and its own body energy to power the apparatus. Keep an eye on this one, we anticipate it to play a major role in the impending robots vs. humans war.

Boeing just announced a (public) first: they shot a UAV out of the sky using the Laser Avenger (an aptly-titled Humvee-mounted laser), the first time a combat vehicle has used such a weapon to knock a flying robot out of the sky. Naturally, the report is short on details, but they did say that they managed to burn a hole in the enemy, quite the feat for a moving target. Of course, once the robots get lasers, we’re all done for.

A young man named Tyler’s built a little gadget that’ll feed his dog even when he’s not around. Using an ioBridge IO-204 module and a continuously rotating servo in the feeder, he’s able to dispense some kibble via a web page he’s built which monitors the action via a webcam. Check the video — the dog sure seems to think it’s rad.

Created by “Ricepuppet” of DeviantArt, this custom Xbox 360 bears the image of Domo-Kun — mascot of NHK, a Japanese TV station. Click here for first picture in gallery.

Here’s a nice paint job that will surely please many Japanese geeks, a Domo-kun painted X360. I’m honestly pretty impressed by the work done here.
